I was recently at my grandparents’ home, where my mom found me holding one of my Memie’s green water goblets. I’ve eyed them for years, as they have been gathered on a china hutch in her dining room for as long as I can remember. My mom has offered them to me before, but even though my Memie passed in 2012, I just didn’t want to remove something she carefully brought into her home. This time, though, I accepted and couldn’t wait to get home and set a table with them. There is something so special about using an item that belonged to my grandmother. I wonder if they were a gift or if they were something she purchased on her own after spotting them at a shop? I wish I could go back and ask these things.

A couple years ago, I was given my Memie’s sweetgrass basket, which my Poppop told me he purchased for seven dollars, I believe. (If you’ve shopped around for sweetgrass baskets in recent years, then you know how long ago that transaction must have been!) She needed a basket to keep her sewing supplies, so my Poppop visited various weaver stands along Hwy 17 until he found the perfect one. It was used so much that the handle ended up breaking off on one side, but I still proudly display it on the top shelf of the glass cabinet in our living room.

Anyway, I hardly imagine these drinking glasses have any monetary value of note, but they are incredibly priceless to me. I can’t wait to use them again and again, while thinking of my Memie each and every time.
